The Ultimate Guide to Cleaning Your Nintendo Switch Controllers

Cleaning Your Nintendo Switch Controllers

If you've ever handed your Joy-Con to a friend and felt that slightly sticky, grimy texture, you already know: controllers get dirty. And it's not just about looks. Dust, dead skin, cooking grease, and snack crumbs don't just sit on the surface—they work their way into the crevices, around the analog sticks, and under the buttons. Over time, this buildup can lead to unresponsive buttons, sticky triggers, and the dreaded Joy-Con drift.

The good news? A regular cleaning routine takes about 10 minutes and can add years to your controller's life. Here's everything you need to know.

Why Cleaning Matters More Than You Think
Your hands aren't sterile. Even if you wash them before gaming (and you should—more on that in a future post), natural oils and sweat transfer to the controller. Add in dust floating through the air, and you've got a perfect recipe for internal buildup.

When debris gets inside the analog stick mechanism, it can interfere with the sensors that detect movement. That's one of the primary causes of Joy-Con drift—your character moves left even when you're not touching the stick. Regular cleaning prevents this before it starts.

What You'll Need

Good news: you probably have most of these items already.

Tool Purpose
Soft, lint-free microfiber cloth Surface wiping (the one you use for glasses is perfect)
Isopropyl alcohol (70% or higher) Disinfecting and breaking down grime
Cotton swabs Reaching tight spots around buttons
Compressed air Blowing dust out of crevices
Soft-bristled brush (clean toothbrush works) Dislodging debris
Toothpicks Cleaning seams gently
Small Phillips or tri-wing screwdriver Only if you plan to open the controller

Pro tip: Avoid paper towels—they can leave tiny scratches on the plastic. Never use harsh chemicals like bleach or ammonia-based cleaners.

Please prepare the following tools. The next lesson will teach you how to clean up your switch controllers.
