Nintendo Switch2 May Support Dual-Screen Gameplay? New Patent Revealed

Mar 12,2025 | FUNLAB-Cheriko

Nintendo Switch 2 magnetic phone accessory

Nintendo recently unveiled a new patent describing a magnetic phone holder that could integrate a smartphone as a second screen for the Switch 2, enabling richer dual-screen gaming experiences. This accessory not only attaches magnetically to the Switch 2 but might also function as a modular expansion component or standalone screen. It could even include a stand feature to expand the console’s usage scenarios.

Since the launch of the Switch 1, Nintendo has dominated the handheld market. With the upcoming release of the next-gen Switch 2, while the company has only confirmed its existence through a teaser trailer, this newly revealed patent hints at potential innovations for the console.

The patent suggests the Switch 2 might include a magnetic accessory for dual-screen gameplay. This attachment could secure a smartphone at adjustable angles and allow other devices to connect via magnets, offering flexible expansion options for the console.

The patent states:
The first and second devices can rotate relative to each other around the magnetic axis, supporting detachment and reconnection.

In other words, players could attach smartphones or other devices magnetically to the Switch 2, adjust their angles as needed, and potentially use them as detachable secondary screens. This would unlock new interactive possibilities for gaming and multitasking.

Magnetic Accessories May Support Multiple Devices

Nintendo’s patent isn’t limited to smartphones—the described magnetic structure has broad compatibility, meaning various devices could connect to the Switch 2. Beyond serving as a second screen, the accessory might also:
  • Act as a standalone stand for the Switch 2, enabling stable placement on desks or surfaces;
  • Adapt to different environments, such as attaching to beds or sofas via a soft-surface fixation system to expand usage scenarios.
The patent notes:
The accessory includes a bedding adapter component for securing it to soft surfaces like beds or couches, enhancing stability.

Nintendo’s Dual-Screen Legacy: Switch 2 Could Evolve the Concept

From the NDS, 3DS, to Wii U, Nintendo has long explored dual-screen gaming. This patent suggests the Switch 2 could elevate the concept further.

While the patent reveals exciting possibilities, its implementation remains uncertain. Historically, Nintendo has filed many patents that never materialized.

Do you think this magnetic accessory will become the Switch 2’s most groundbreaking innovation, or just another unrealized concept?
