Nintendo's latest patent exposes Nintendo Switch 2's AI image optimization technology that outputs 540p footage at 1080p

On March 13, a patent filed by Nintendo confirmed that the Switch 2’s handheld mode will utilize image upscaling technology to enhance the performance of compatible games. The patent elaborates on the mechanics of its super-resolution technology and provides visual comparisons between native and AI-enhanced resolutions.

As the successor to the original Switch, the Switch 2 has become Nintendo’s worst-kept commercial secret in recent years since its official announcement in January. Compared to its predecessor, the new model features a larger screen, redesigned Joy-Con controllers, and backward compatibility with most physical and digital Switch games (with rare exceptions). While Nintendo will continue supporting the original Switch with new titles like Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Xenoblade Chronicles X Definitive Edition, it remains to be seen whether these games will receive performance boosts on Switch 2.

Though FCC filings previously revealed details about the Switch 2’s wireless communication capabilities, the latest patent sheds light on its technical advancements. Submitted to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on March 13, the patent demonstrates how the Switch 2 employs AI-based super-resolution technology in handheld mode to upscale lower-resolution visuals to high-definition in real-time.

Key Details from the Switch 2 Patent:
  • Filed with the USPTO on March 13, 2024
  • Covers practical applications of AI-powered image enhancement in gaming
  • Showcases examples of upscaling 540p visuals to 1080p in handheld mode
  • Additional details to be unveiled at the Nintendo Direct presentation on April 2
Using a 540p source image as an example, the patent explains the AI upscaling process. Similar to NVIDIA’s DLSS or AMD’s FSR, the technology leverages neural networks to intelligently reconstruct rendered frames. In Nintendo’s demonstration, the processed output achieves 1080p resolution with better frame rates compared to native rendering.

However, the patent does not clarify the impact of this technology on battery life or whether docked mode will support higher resolutions. The list of games compatible with the feature also remains unconfirmed. This AI upscaling patent follows recent Nintendo innovations, including a patent for proximity-based voice chat in gaming apps.

The Switch 2’s price, release date, and full specifications will be revealed during the April 2 Nintendo Direct. Analysts currently predict a retail price exceeding $400.
